José presents special grapes

Last week co-author of Wine Grapes Dr José Vouillamoz came over to London from his native Switzerland to bewitch British wine writers with a wine tasting he describes below. In Jamie Goode's account of the event José is described as 'a real star in the making: an ultra-cool scientist'. See Jamie's video of the tasting.

Wine writer Jim Budd was moved to wonder whether José is not wine's 'special one' - a reference to his sharing a first name with a certain particularly self-confident football manager. All the pictures we reproduce here with thanks were first published on Jim Budd's blog. Below see wine writer Oz Clarke (left) and chairman of the Association of Wine Educators Richard Bampfield MW listening with rapt attention to José.

My recent ‘Unusual varieties from Wine Grapes’ master class given for the Circle of Wine Writers last Monday at the London International Wine Fair was unquestionably the most exclusive tasting that I have ever organised. Eleven hard-to-find varietal wines were presented to a sold-out audience of 58 expert palates. Several months were needed to gather these gems with the invaluable help of Angela Reddin (CWW tastings sub-committee and co-ordinator). Given the rarity of these wines (only a few hundred bottles produced for some of them), I would like to take the opportunity of wholeheartedly thanking all the producers for their incredible generosity.

My motto concerning rare and obscure varieties is: ‘save them, drink them!’
